There are a lot of misunderstanding concerning the Mercury Dimes which is judged one most fascinating coins in the United States mint industry. It does not stand for Mercury, one of the Roman gods. In reality, the outline should not be that of a male. It is a representation of a goddess with a Phrygian cap with wings denoting freedom of expression. The Phrygian cap symbolizes liberty, and is also popularly known as a liberty cap.

American history mintage of related dimes began in 1793. For many years, the lay-out was assumed to be that of Mercury’s. Adolph A. Weinman's lay-out corrected the long time misconception of the character on the coin. The representation is labelled as the Winged Liberty Head Dime.

A Roman symbol of power, the fasces, together with an olive branch which symbolizes warfare and peace are on the back side of the coin. Numismatists particularly check for the bands that hold the fasces issued on the reverse side. The two pieces of bands are separated on well minted coins. The exclusivity of the Full Split Bands add to its net quality. It adds to the coin’s appeal. The fasces symbol is frequently linked with the Fascist Movement, sans the disgrace of the Axis power.

Manufactured in 1916, these coins have been well circulated in the United States, several years before Benito Mussolini’s prominent leadership. The 1916-D run lay-out was only about 264,000 articles, hence, the scarcity. The Barber Model dimes were still being produced by the Denver Mint at that time. There were individuals who mischievously minted Mercury dimes with the 1916-D labels on them, hence, enthusiasts should be careful.

There was also a fault on the carved date in 1942. The amount of these Mercury Dime, is very incomplete and the time of genuine manufacturing had been found to be much earlier. The over date error in 1942 was smaller in Denver. Your picky eyes would certainly take notification of these atypical jewels.

The equivalent of it in terms of money is not the only important thing to consider. Noting the brilliancy of its sculptor, it is not a big shock if Mercury Dimes would be one of the stand out items in any group of collectables.
